Henry Archer
Experience working in 5 plays and 1 musical. Our school production of 'One Man, Two Guvnors,' was a pivotal experience in my acting career in my performance as Alan Dangle. In preparing for the role, I researched the Italian Renaissance style of Commedia dell'Arte to understand and use the mechanics of timing, improvisation, and slapstick comedy. This was supported by studying Carlo Goldoni's, 'A Servant to Two Masters'. I learned how to create a nuanced, larger-than-life character, while maintaining a sense of beauty and truth in the performance. Through rehearsals, I learned how to work in an ensemble cast, navigate constructive criticism, and stay disciplined even when the rehearsal process became challenging. This experience shaped me as a performer and as a person, and I am eager to continue developing these skills at a higher academic level. Through my LAMDA qualifications, I explored a range of theatrical styles, including classical, contemporary, melodrama and naturalism, showcasing my ability to perform a variety of characters. This sparked an interest in exploring the psychology of acting in more depth, and I hope to write my own academic paper exploring how actors can tap into psychological realism to portray complex characters through deep emotional and intellectual work. Achieving several Distinctions in my LAMDA grades reflects my attention to detail and my emotional range as an actor. I want to continue exploring performance technique to further develop my actors' skills. As both Drama Scholar and Subject Prefect, I enjoy being a role model to younger students in our school community, who may see drama as an unrealistic career path. I had the opportunity to run a co-curricular council with my peers to raise awareness for the arts at school and in the local community. Our scholar workshops have given me the chance to work with other likeminded actors, exploring drama and theatre in greater depth in a collaborative environment. In my final year I have recently completed our school musical. Oliver! Which after 7 months of rehearsals we performed 5 brilliant nights with fantastic reviews pouring in, i played the role of Bill Sikes a sharp contrast to my former role as Alan Dangle and in doing so I was nominated by the National School theatre awards for ‘Best supporting Actor in a musical 2025’ which i am deeply honoured by and hope to win soon.
