Kerstin Gandler
I am an artist who works with voice and language, with body and movement. I work at the interface between acting, radio plays and film on the one hand, and teaching and instruction on the other. But the picture is broader than that. While still studying instrumental pedagogy (IGP) at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna (formerly the Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst) and working as a recorder teacher and concert recorder player in two ensembles of my own, I began training as an actress at the Franz Schubert Conservatory for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. The desire to express myself through not only an instrument but also through my body, voice and language ultimately led me to obtain a second artistic diploma in 1999, after which I started my career as an actress. Initially focusing on theatre, I broadened my skillset through further training in film acting at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy, classical singing with Prof. S. Vittucci in Vienna, and radio drama and dubbing masterclasses in Stockholm. This has enabled me to work across a variety of artistic genres and settings. Moving to Stockholm in 2010 marked the beginning of my career in Swedish, as well as my focus on motherhood to be able to raise my son bilingually. The move and freelance life in Sweden also meant having to take on additional roles, such as substitute teaching in preschools as well as working as a language and marketing consultant. I also worked as a barista, which gave me a good opportunity to practise working in two languages. My interest in languages and pedagogy, my continuous, intensive contact with the opera world through exchanges with colleagues, classical singing training and former experience as an assistant director have finally led me to start working as a language coach for opera singers alongside my work as an actress and voice actress in recent years. Addressing phonetic, content-related, didactic and literary issues, and supporting singers in their work with the foreign language to help them make it their own, is stimulating and challenging. As an experienced professional actress who has interpreted literary texts in Swedish and German, I recognize the importance of precise and accurate language work in an artist's toolkit. Only when you 'conquer' a foreign language will you feel confident in your artistic performance and emotional expression. In 2023/24, I took my first steps towards becoming an author by working as a columnist for Swedish Radio (Sveriges Radio). I wrote and recorded several 'Tankar för dagen' episodes, produced by Dmitri Plax. Embedded in the daily radio magazine P1 Morgon, these segments achieved a wide national reach when they were broadcast live, and they are still available as podcasts on SRPlay and various other platforms.
