Mbonge Ngomani

Mbonge Ngomani is an award‑winning South African actor, singer, educator, and theatre‑maker whose practice bridges performance, pedagogy, and cultural storytelling. He holds a Diploma in Theatre and Performance from the University of Cape Town, where he received the Elli Wallendorf Prize for excellence in acting, and is completing a Postgraduate Certificate in Education specialising in Dramatic Arts. As Director of Theatre Education and Practice at Isiba Arts Collective, Mbonge leads artistic and educational initiatives that integrate rehearsal, pedagogy, and community engagement. He is also a core performer with Isiba, contributing to productions that foreground multilingual storytelling and culturally grounded performance. His ensemble work in uMqambi weNyembezi was recognised at the National Arts Festival, where the production received acclaim for its innovative fusion of Xhosa oral traditions and contemporary theatre practice. Mbonge’s performance career spans classical, contemporary, and African repertoires. His notable credits include Hamlet in Hamlet, Christian in Ruined, Commander Ntsundwana in iTyala, John in The Island, and Themba in uMqambi weNyembezi. He has also performed in adaptations of African literary works such as Drilling the Death Drill and Thuthuzelekani: Restoration of the Fallen, as well as productions like The Confession and Scenes from Fences. These roles demonstrate his ability to move fluidly between canonical texts, contemporary African theatre, and socially resonant new works. His artistic research explores the relationship between breath, embodiment, and truthful expression, drawing on Fitzmaurice Voicework and African movement vocabularies. Fluent in English and IsiXhosa, and conversant in Setswana and IsiZulu, he is committed to multilingual and culturally responsive theatre education. Through his dual practice as performer and educator, Mbonge Ngomani advances a model of theatre that is scholarly, artistic, and socially engaged cultivating the next generation of performers while contributing to the broader discourse on African theatre and pedagogy.
