Sam Elliott | ActorCV

Hi there, I'm Sam Elliott. Born on August 9, 1944, in Sacramento, California, I've spent over five decades carving out a space for myself in Hollywood, and, heck, it's been quite a journey. I cut my teeth on the stage before moving on to the silver screen. My academic journey took me through the halls of the University of Oregon and Clark College, where I honed my craft. These experiences laid the foundation for a career that’s been as diverse as it’s been long. My big break came with a role in Lifeguard back in 1976, but it was my performance in Mask alongside Cher in 1985 that really put me on the map. Over the years, I’ve had the good fortune to play some pretty memorable characters: Virgil Earp in Tombstone, The Stranger in The Big Lebowski, and most recently, Bobby in A Star Is Born. That last one even got me an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. What sets me apart? Well, I’d have to say it’s my voice, deep, resonant, and a bit of a trademark at this point. That and my knack for bringing an authentic, lived in quality to the roles I play, especially those cowboy characters that folks seem to love. I've been lucky enough to receive some accolades along the way, including a Screen Actors Guild Award and recognition from the National Board of Review. My recent work in the western miniseries 1883 has been particularly rewarding and brought home a SAG Award. All in all, it's been one heck of a ride, and I'm grateful for every minute of it. Thanks for taking an interest in my story.
